Zooming Out from the Trenches

In our routine lives as web professionals, we tend to get caught up in the details of our jobs and projects. Those of us in the trenches obsess over the color of a background, the size of an image, writing valid and semantic markup, keeping one technology separated from the other, or whether a design should be liquid or fixed-width. We engage in the daily fight and rigors, trying to keep up with (or stay ahead of) everyone else. Each of us is so closely surrounded by our own immediate tasks at hand, we rarely get a chance to stop, zoom out, and survey the landscape ahead. Let’s pull back from the pixels and selectors and techniques and hacks, and look at a bigger picture. Let’s strip away the limitations of our own thinking, examine several scenarios of the not-too-distant future, and start asking ourselves how today’s work is impacted by the potential of tomorrow.
