Every now and then, I write something that starts out as a normal log entry to go in this very space. Then the writing gets longer, I spend more time polishing it, and its importance somehow gets escalated to a level where I don’t want it to disappear into the ether of reverse-chronological archives. Such is the case with my latest piece, “Throwing Tables Out the Window,” excerpted thusly:
With the CSS waters thoroughly tested by many sites that have taken the plunge, it’s time for us to start cheering from the water below, coaxing and encouraging those who haven’t yet jumped in, to make that jump. There’s no longer any reason to use tables for layout, nor is there reason to maintain multiple versions of a site solely for different desktop browsers. Throw the tables out first. Trust us, they’re not needed anymore.
Those who were at Digital Design World in Seattle this year saw me present a session titled, “No More Tables, CSS Layout Techniques”. This article is a follow-up to that presentation, because the results of work contained in that presentation are just too good not to publish.
Jump on in. The water is fine.

Note: The message from this presentation still needs to be spread to lots of folks that aren’t aware of the new possibilities of CSS layout. I’m considering taking this show on the road… if there’s specific interest. If you’re a part of a company, group, or organization (large or small) that could benefit from — and are interested in — the presentation described in this article, use the contact form or send a message to present-at- (you know the rest) to inquire on the possibilities of me coming to you.
